Bolzano Festival
Description:
The summer-long festival in Belzano is devoted to the musicians of tomorrow. Youth orchestras, soloists, budding pianists and student musicians are showcased in a prestigious series of events that includes the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition. Every encouragement is given to the young musicians who respond with acclaimed performances. An important part of the festival is the 'Antiqva', a series of 10 concerts of Baroque and Renaissance music held in different historic venues. Famous orchestra directors, renowned soloists, distinguished juries and a festive environment add to the mix at this popular event.

Music and Drama Performances
Description:
In Taormina, the picturesque tourist capital of Sicily, a programme of music, drama, film and arts performances is held throughout the summer in the town's well-preserved Greek Theatre. Actually rebuilt substantially by the Romans, the location is fantastic, perched over the Sicilian coastline and snow-capped Mount Etna rising behind. Among the many film screenings, concerts and plays performed there is a programme of modern music. Elton John, James Taylor and Alanis Morrissette have appeared here in past years.

Roman Summer
Description:
Warm summer evenings in Rome are filled with the exciting possibilities of 'Estate Romana' - the three-month-long Roman Summer festival. Classical music, jazz and rock, film and theatre take place mainly at open-air venues throughout the city. Concerts are staged at archaeological sites and monuments. Church steps and piazzas provide a stage for all kinds of musical performances. City parks host entire music festivals and open-air screens are set up on the River Tiber Island and on the top of Gianicolo Hill, showing popular late night movies. Indeed much of Rome becomes a stage from June through to September. Theatrical performances take place in the ruins at Ostia Antica; the Baths of Caracalla become a classical music venue. The entire Foro Italico becomes an entertainment space with rock concerts, discos, and a huge open-air gymnasium.

Cinema Island
Description:
The Tiberina Island, mid-stream in the centre of historic Rome, becomes the setting for a season of films and film-related socials in the summertime. Evocatively lit, the island provides a romantic setting for a full programme of mainstream and cult movies, retrospectives and previews. Movie makers and stars mingle with the film watching public on the island 'village' which converts, after midnight, to an elegant 'lounge' under the stars where people from the film industry and cultural world gather to enjoy music at the piano bar. The event extends to dancing, fashion shows, food and wine tastings and themed evenings.

Verona Opera Festival
Description:
Where gladiators once battled to the death, aficionados now enjoy opera amid an atmosphere of refinement and civility. Verona's Roman Arena has survived the ravages of time and earthquakes to provide one of the most fascinating modern event venues in the world. Through the summer, a programme of opera takes place on two to six evenings of the week. The tradition of opera at this 2,000-year-old open-air theatre dates from 1913. The opera stage is the biggest in the world. 15,000 spectators fill the venue, and opera performances attract over half a million visitors each year. There is a great range of ticket prices, depending on prestige and location.

Kals'Art
Description:
Kals'Art is a two month long festival of music, cinema and theatre performances that takes place in various locations throughout the city of Palermo. The streets, parks and pretty piazzas in the former Arab quarter of Kalsa are turned over to the event which includes a great line-up of entertainment ranging from theatre performances and film screenings to live music and arts exhibitions. Unquestionably a marvellous city at any time of the year, but the added attraction of Kals'Art makes this a great time to visit.

Festival Internazionale di Musica da Camera
Description:
Cervo is a picture postcard tourist town with rooftops rising steeply from the Ligurian shoreline. Micat in Vertice
Description:
Established in 1932, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana has worked towards providing master class tuition for some of the principal musical instruments including the piano, guitar, flute and violin. Each year it presents the 'Micat in Vertice' concert season which includes many great performances by some of the country's top musicians and orchestras.

Opera Barga
Description:
The small medieval town of Barga in Tuscany is home to the baroque Teatro dei Differenti, venue since 1973 of Opera Barga. What began as a series of courses for young singers and musicians grew into a full operatic programme of smaller, lesser-known operas of the baroque period together with more modern and contemporary compositions.

Puccini Opera Festival
Description:
Puccini was born in Lucca in 1858, but lived most of his life in the small village of Torre del Lago, 18km (11 miles) away. One of the most distinguished composers of the 20th century, his life and works are celebrated in the Puccini Opera Festival, staged at a purpose-built open-air theatre in Torre del Lago. Visitors - of which there are about 40,000 each year - also visit the Maestro's birthplace in Lucca and other places in the district where he lived and worked. His mortal remains lie in the Villa Mausoleum, close by the theatre. Some of the greatest names in opera - Mario del Monaco, Guiseppe Di Stefano, Luciano Pavorotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras - have appeared at the festival in the past.

International Film Festival

The Venice International Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica) attracts many movers and shakers, stars and icons of the movie business. International Organ Festival

The long-standing International Organ Festival of Aosta began life back in 1966. Of interest mainly to lovers of classical music and in particular to organ music enthusiasts, it is a festival of Europe-wide importance, hosting concert artists of international stature. Roccella Jonica Jazz Festival

Rossini Opera Festival
Description:
Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was born in the town of Pesaro on the shores of the Adriatic, where a festival of his work is now held each year in his honour. The Rossini Festival has seen many of the great composer's lesser-known works revived and some of them have since entered the standard operatic repertoire. The festival was established in 1980 to support to the publication of Rossini's complete works and is now an important fixture in the operatic calendar

Stresa Musical Weeks (Settimane Musicali di Stresa)

On the shore of Lake Maggiore the traditional resort of Stresa is the main host of a summer festival of classical music that spreads itself among surrounding towns and villages. Churches, basilicas and historic buildings in lakeside and island villages have extended the festival far beyond its main Palace of Congress home. Founded in 1961, the festival is associated with many great artists with whom it regularly collaborates. In addition, young musicians who have won international competitions frequently perform here. The festival has its own resident orchestra and also co-operates with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai in the development of artistic co-productions. The festival represents an opportunity to attend performances of the highest quality, be they of symphonic or chamber orchestras, conductors or soloists, of international renown or emerging talent.

Venice Biennale
Description:
Since 1895, the Venice Biennale has set standards in promoting contemporary art and culture to a wide audience. An international pace-setter, this prestigious institution manages and promotes artistic programmes, including the Venice International Film Festival, the International Art Exhibition, the International Architecture Exhibition, a festival of contemporary music and festivals of theatre and of dance. Most of these are regarded as world class events in their own right. Through programmes of workshops, concerts, exhibitions and performances, the Venice Biennale has attracted worldwide acclaim as well as occasionally provoking controversy. Various venues are used for the Biennale and there is a permanent site at the Giardini Publicci, where many countries maintain their own pavilions, and where a thematic international exhibition is also held. In even-numbered years, this site is used for the biennial Architecture Exhibition, where many of the world's leading architects display their skills and visions.

Asti Palio
Description:
Pre-dating its more famous counterpart in Sienna, horses have raced around the streets of Asti once a year since 1275. The event now takes place at the Piazza Alfieri which is converted into a stadium for the occasion. Each neighbourhood and village of Asti enters a horse in its own colours and the racing is fiercely competitive. Much more than just a horse race in the street, there is a spectacular performance of the "Sbandieratori" on the day before - troupes of drummers and flag-throwers creating dazzling shows of movement, noise and colour and forming human towers. On the day itself there is an incredible procession of 1,400 characters in elaborate medieval costume with trumpeters, drummers, more flags, horses, oxen and assorted other livestock. They begin on the Cathedral Square to finish at the site of the Palio

Douja d'Or Wine Festival
Description:
In one of the major wine growing regions of Italy, producers and buyers come together each year at Asti's Palazzo del Collegio and the marquee erected in its courtyard, to sample and to buy and sell. This is also a great opportunity for visitors to debunk the negative vibes associated with Asti Spumante and to try some of the really outstanding wines of the region. There are also exhibitions and demonstrations, many varieties of local dishes are on sale, and there are celebration dinners and musical entertainments in the evenings. Douja d'Or, the Cup of Gold, is a 22-carat affair that runs more or less in parallel with the spectacular Asti Palio, making this the place to be in September for wine buffs and horse racing fans

Independent Days Festival
Description:
Part of a series of rock music concerts run in various cities in Italy, Bologna hosts the September event. Past performers include Bad Religion, Queens of the Stone Age, The Bravery, Skin and Futureheads. The roll call of the Independent production team is somewhat more impressive including bands such as Coldplay, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand and The Darkness. International Festival of Urban Theatre
Description:
Four days are set aside each September for the Festival Internazionale del Teatro Urbano, when performers invade the streets of central Rome, transforming urban spaces into improvised theatre spaces for live spaces. Young performers and alternative theatre groups are given an opportunity to shine, and visitors can join in too. The aim is to combat indifference with surprise "guerrilla tactics" and events can spring up in unsuspected places such as street corners, or any spot deemed in need of "carnivalisation". As Shakespeare once wrote, "All the world's a stage", and many surprised passers-by find themselves performing on it. There are always a few surprises in store to provoke a reaction and involve the audience in what they are seeing

Italian Grand Prix
Description:
One of the longest running events on the motor racing calendar, the Italian Grand Prix draws huge crowds of car-mad racing fans every year to the track at Monza, 16km (10 miles) from Milan. Michael Schumacher won the famous race five times in recent years, including in 2006, but has since then retired. Madonna di Piedigrotta Festival
Description:
The Madonna of Piedigrotta is brought out of her resting place in the church named after her once in every 50 years. Celebrations in her name, though, take place on a regular basis, once each year. A very moving celebration, the emphasis is upon the slow return of the procession to the shrine, after a visit to the shore where a boat parade takes place at Mergellina. This reflects the legend that the image of the Madonna was rediscovered by fishermen. There are church services and masses in honour of the Madonna, and the occasion is also marked by theatrical performances and music concerts

Ravello Classical Music Festival
Description:
A two-month long music and art event, this event is also known as the Amalfi Coast Chamber Orchestra Festival. The concerts take place in the Ravello villa that inspired Wagner's "Parsifal", and also at a convent in the nearby seaside village of Conca dei Marini. The main venue includes a suspended stage, built around the gardens of the villa and hanging above a cliff 350m (1,150ft) above the sea. A full musical teaching programme runs in parallel with a series of concerts. Top artists and musicians are attracted here, where the music is rivalled in excellence only by the location - the stunning landscape of the famous Amalfi Coast
