Alghero is the most important tourist centre of the Riviera del Corallo and of north-western Sardinia. The historic town centre with its characteristic streets, the churches in Catalan-Gothic style, the town walls, the towers and the Aragon style buildings constantly remind that the town was dominated for 4 centuries first by the Catalans, then by the Spanish.

Alghero is in fact the only town in Italy where the Catalan language is still spoken.
